In the past, storage of a device is as small as 1 megabyte or several kilobytes. As technology changes over time, more codes are required to perform a certain task, and therefore, device with huge data storages are required. In modern days, requirement for performing huge programs increased exponentially. Programs usually involves analysis of data that amount to hundreds gigabytes or even terabytes. Under such a high demand of data storage, most devices with limited data storage are unable to perform those tasks. However, with the development of cloud computing, it is possible that people can do these high-demand task by using devices that has limited storage.

The idea of cloud is similar to management of times and labor force. Since it is sure that one device can only process certain amount of tasks, we can separate a huge task into small pieces which allow our device to perform and calculate results. On the same time, the rest of the tasks will be delivered to virtual machines. In doing so, people can save their time on performing the program. Imaging you are building a road, using only one device is like building the road from one side till the end, and using cloud is like building the road with other people, and you are only responsible for your part of the road. Mathematically, it is much faster to work on part of the task than work individually.

Cloud is powerful, and it is way efficient than personal devices. However, it is not secure when it comes to the issue of privacy. Because one needs to borrow the virtual machine from big companies, what you are running and testing may be recorded by these companies. It is a very serious problem when huge companies and governments use clouds since their secrets are usually related to huge changes in market and policies. Although cloud computing is not generally used in business and government, it is still a very powerful technology that is extremely helpful to those scientific experiment involving huge amount of processes. For example, data analysis which involves thousands of terabytes and even stimulation of nuclear exploration will need such a strong computing capability.

Cloud computing is comparatively new in computer science, what will it become in the next 10 still remain unknown, but it is sure that the idea of multitasking and separation of works will be kept as the certain of further development.

Questions to Ask:

Since cloud computing is mainly used to solve lack of capability of computing power, will it still exist if hardware is able to fulfill the need of computing power?

If cloud computing is not safe for privacy and security, is there any way that cryptology can help solve this issue?

How does cloud computing deal with the speed of data transferring?
